On April 22, 2009, six Rotarians from Nanaimo, British Columbia embarked on two-week planning/service mission to Ghana. The purpose of the trip is to develop a multi-year program of sustainable projects that address sanitation, health and education needs of the Sunyani region, in the areas of literacy, drinking water, waste management, AIDS/HIV education, malaria prevention, micro credit and knowledge transfer.

Thurs. Friday - April 30 & May 1st Happenings

Yesterday (Thursday) was a very busy day for the Nanaimo Rotary Ghana Mission team.

The Nanaimo and Sunyani Rotarians traveled together by bus to CILIA (Compassion in Love in Action) orphanage and Korkors Charity Medical Center. We toured Cilia, which is home to 34 orphans, and saw their beds with the malaria nets that we donated and commissioned the opening of the orphanage's school library with books donated by the Sunyani Rotary.

Cilia was a very impressive facility, with clean washrooms, tidy rooms and well-maintained grounds. The staff organized a concert by the children who sang traditional Ghananian songs. The Nanaimo Rotary has some money for gifts and may donate a small amount so the orphanage can buy bedding and other supplies. While at Cilia I took some photos of butterflies in a field nearby (see attached samples).

Next it was off to Korkors in Teichiman, a very busy commercial city . Korkors adopts AIDS orphans and then finds foster homes for the children in the community. The center has ambitious plans and is building a hostel and using land donated by a local subchief is planning to build a school. We attended the official opening of the well dug next to the hostel, which was funded by the Rotary Clubs. Korkors may be able to package water from its well (in plastic sachets) and sell the water to help pay its costs.

While in Teichiman we paid our respects to the local subchief and then were treated to a sampling of annual celebrations for the chief. The costumes and dancing were incredible - like a mix of New Orleans, Halloween, and a hip-hop bash.

Thursday night I happened on a big street party that students organized to celebrate May Day. There was a brass band, drums, and conga-line dancing in the streets.

Friday morning the visiting Rotarians met with the Rotary Club of Sunyani Central to review current and potential projects. After lunch I went with team leader Carey McIver to visit a rural suburban village and learn more about their water and sanitation needs. Nearly 35 adults and children turned out for our visit arranged by the principal of the Sunyani Municipal Primary School.
The rural suburb is composed of small farms that grow cassava and plantain and some teak forests. The people are well fed but the women must walk one mile to get water. We will see if the Rotary could sponsor to dig a well for the community.

Tomorrow at 9 a.m. I'm off to the Mole National Wildlife Refuge with students from Vancouver Island University and Sunyani Polytechnic where we're sure to see elephants and other large wild animals.
